Short description

Also known as Durban Road Camp. Not to be confused with Durban Camp that was named due to its establishment in 1940 as a transit and rest camp for British troops serving in North and East Africa. Durban Camp was situated in the suburb of Clairwood, south of Durban's city centre, near the port. In March 1941, with the arrival of the first 10,000 Italian prisoners in Durban, half of the camp was designated for their reception and transit; considering that many of them were severely ill, it also functioned as a hospital for their treatment at the local field hospital (Clairwood Hospital). However, the Clairwood Camp was relatively small, and, because of its geographical position, the transit to the port was challenging. In September 1941, a section of the ‘UDF Oribi Camp’ in Pietermaritzburg was allocated for prisoners of war (POWs), designated as ‘Durban Road Camp’ by the city council, as it bordered the national road to Durban on its northern side. Subsequently, the Clairwood/Durban Camp reverted to serving exclusively British troops.
