After returning to Italy at the end of his Namibia assignment, he became chairman of the Interministerial Commission for the Recovery of Works of Art. Towards the late 2000s, he was posted back to Africa, first as Italy’s ambassador to Nigeria and subsequently to Benin. He died of a heart attack in Windhoek, Namibia, on 22 January 2012, aged 69. On 27 January 2012, an exhibition in his honour was held at the National Art Gallery of Namibia which featured poems focusing on key geographical features of Namibia, including the Spitzkoppe, the Orange River, the Fish River Canyon, and Sossusvlei.
