| Short Summary / Description |
As the catalogue 'A Cabinet of Curiosities' by the Manx Museum reads: “This wooden ship model was handmade by an Italian, when he was interned as an ‘enemy alien’ on the Isle of Man during the Second World War. A label on the model reads ‘By Mennella Aniello – Presoner (sic) of War - ‘S’ Camp - Douglas (I.O.M.) Dec. 1943’. The hull of the ship model has been made from separate strips of wood to create a planking effect. Remember that materials were scarce during wartime”. A wooden model of a three-masted sailing ship, mounted on a shaped wooden base with two supports. The hull is natural wood with a pale finish, and the deck features small fittings including a hatch, coiled rigging, and a bowsprit extending from the bow. The masts are rigged with fine thread lines, and a red flag is mounted at the top of the centre mast. A small blank plaque is set into the base, and a narrow plaque is also fitted along the ship's deck. |
